April 7, 2019

Starting spoons:  19

One thing you may have noticed is it doesn't matter whether a thing is enjoyable or not, it still takes energy.  I'm hoping to get back up to full spoons today since it's back to work tomorrow.  But I also want to try to take care of myself a little better today than yesterday.  Dealing with a few forks since I wasn't very good at self-care yesterday; let's see how the day goes.

Spoons remaining for tomorrow:  -14

Noting the double-edged sword aspect.  Neglecting self care for a day borrows fewer spoons from the next day, but means more forks for the next day.  (Already thinking about how I didn't bathe or wash my hair today so I will have to shower in the morning.)  Having more coffee means more spoons but makes me nauseous, so that's a fork.  Getting things ready ahead of time means fewer spoons used the next day, but borrows said spoons.

Since my period is just spotty today, that should mean it'll be done tomorrow, which will mean at least 1 fork gone--a lot of my other forks relate to it so in reality it might be 3 or 4 forks gone.  Back to work tomorrow, so we'll try it!

April 6, 2019

Starting spoons: 3

So I won't get back to 20 for tomorrow, but hopefully by Monday.  Today is do as little as possible day, although I do have to do laundry.  I've told everyone I just want to rest.  Let's see how that goes.

April 5, 2019

Starting spoons:  3

As usual, it's Friday and I am pretty much done.  I can will myself through today with the promise of a rest tomorrow, but the fewer spoons I have, the more I need.

(-4 spoons)

People ask me what I'm going to do on the weekend, and they think I'm kidding when I say I'm going to sit.  But I just don't have the energy for much more.

April 4, 2019

Starting spoons:  7

Yesterday I used 13 spoons too many.  Bleargh.

Of course, the fewer spoons I have, the more spoons everything takes.  Things that otherwise wouldn't even register as spoons become whole spoons.  As well, emotional spoons become more important and in shorter supply.  There are also more forks.  But here we go...

Check Facebook and email (-1 spoon)
Cat snuggles (-1 spoon)
Fork:  dizzy (low blood pressure) (-1 spoon)
Get up (-1 spoon)
Fork:  backache (-1 spoon)
Fork:  brain fog.  Means I have to take extra time to figure out what I'm doing, I forget what I wanted to do or how to do it, and I have to do some things twice (-1 spoon plus additional spoons through day for doing things twice)
Get food for cat (-1 spoon)

For those keeping track, those were my spoons left for today and I haven't even gotten dressed yet.  Time to start borrowing from tomorrow.  Oh, tomorrow's me will be upset, but also too tired to be upset.

Use wrong dish, get food again (-1 spoon)
Big fork:  period in full swing, cramps and all (-2 spoons)
Forget what I was going to wear (-1 spoon)
Fork:  coughing fit (-1 spoon)
Pick out clothes, put them on, realize they're dirty, get dressed again (-2 spoons)
Spray dry shampoo in hair, brush it and put in ponytail (-1 spoon)
Fork:  handful of hair comes out in my hair while putting in ponytail (-1 spoon)
Brush teeth (-1 spoon)
Can't find lunch I made to pack, have to find something else (-1 spoon)
Pack lunch (-1 spoon)
Make small breakfast (-1 spoon)
Make coffee (-1 spoon)
Get travel mug from storage (-1 spoon)
Put on coat and boots (-1 spoon)
Realize I'm running late, stress (-1 spoon)
Travel to work, not driving (-1 spoon)
Fork:  nausea (-1 spoon)

Travel home from work, not driving (-1 spoon)
Snack (+1 spoon)
Get food for the cat (-1 spoon)
Help make supper (-2 spoons)
Eat supper (+1 spoon)
Watch TV & surf internet (-2 spoons)

Now, it's 5:30 and I have a choice.  I want to go to sleep but if I do that then when I wake up it'll be too early and I'll use up spoons by the time it's time to get ready for work.  Plus more hours of sleep doesn't seem to equal more spoons.  I want to take a bath because of my backache and period cramps, but that's 1 more spoon.  Right now I've used 31 extra spoons which means there are 9 total for tomorrow.  Now, tomorrow is Friday, so I can borrow from Saturday as I have to and then be just a lump on a bump on Saturday, but bleargh.

I got hungry so I made a snack (-1 spoon)
But I ate the snack (+1 spoon)
Fork:  coughing fit (-1 spoon)
I decided to take a bath (-1 spoon)
I was so tired, I fell asleep in the bath.  I'm going to count that as a nap (+1 spoon)
Get ready for bed (-1 spoon)
Cat snuggles (-1 spoon)
Fork:  coughing fit (-1 spoon)
Fork:  foot/leg cramps (-1 spoon)
Fork:  arm pain, burning & tingling (-1 spoon)

Total spoons remaining for tomorrow:  -17

That gives me 3, so again I'll have used them before I get to work.  If tomorrow is like today, I'll have used them before I get dressed.  Tomorrow will be sheer willpower.  As I said above, tomorrow's me will be upset, but also too tired to be upset.

April 3, 2019

Starting spoons:  14

Yesterday, I used 6 spoons too many.  I'm going to try to take things easy today.

Big Fork:  Supper last night turned out to have hidden wheat and corn meaning double allergic reaction today.  This causes a rash as well as cold-like symptoms, so I am taking away 4 spoons as per the recommendations for a cold since I feel like I have one.  (-4 spoons)

Watch TV & surf internet (-2 spoons)
Help clean up after supper (-1 spoon)
Having trouble focusing and feeling just a little bit dizzy (around 8:00 pm, still too early for sleep)
Bath--Mom ran it for me, thanks Mom! (-1 spoons)
Get food for the cat (-1 spoon)
Snack (+1 spoon)
Get ready for bed (-1 spoon)

Total spoons remaining for tomorrow: -13

Ouch.  So much for taking it easy today.  This means I start tomorrow off with 7 spoons. I'll use those up before I even get to work.  Most of my forks are uncontrollable, but at least I made sure to avoid my allergens today, so no allergic reaction tomorrow.  Even so, I won't be able to get back up to 20 spoons tomorrow, and possibly not this week.  I'm going to be TIRED!

April 2, 2019

Starting Spoons:  21 spoons

1 extra spoon for today because I managed to save one yesterday.  Here we go...

Total spoons remaining for tomorrow:  -6 spoons

Today I didn't feel too rough, and I didn't do too much, but I did use 7 extra spoons.  At least I had that extra, which makes a 6 spoon lack.  So tomorrow, even if I do sleep well tonight as I expect to, I'll start out with 14 spoons.  This is why it gets tough counting spoons--it's so easy to get behind and so tough to get ahead.  Tomorrow I will try to take it easy.

April 1, 2019

Total spoons remaining for tomorrow:  1

I managed to budget pretty decently today, so I have a spare spoon for tomorrow.  Yay! :)

What Am I Doing Here?

Life in Cutlery is my attempt at a daily journal, using a combination of spoon theory and fork theory.

My combination of the 2 is each fork is a extra negative spoon; though for the purposes of this, I'll only use forks I can't get rid of easily--so unlike the above article I'm not counting going to the bathroom, for example.

I give myself a baseline of 20 spoons per day since my issues are draining but not as serious as many others.  Then I'm using this as my baseline for the number of spoons each thing takes, although if something uses less of my energy I'll count it differently (for example, surfing the internet is listed as 2 spoons but I'll count it as 1 as it's my "active rest").  I'm counting meals and coffee each as an extra positive spoon, since they temporarily raise my energy.  Last, if I use more than 20 spoons in a day, I'll subtract the extra used spoons from the next day.  If I use fewer than 20 spoons in a day, although this is not usual or likely, I will add those extra unused spoons to the next day.

So each day I'm going to write about how many spoons I start with and how many I use and how I use them.  Most of my spoons go toward really boring things but that's okay.

What makes me have to count spoons?

The most spoon-draining thing I deal with is suspected hypothyroidism.  This is, for me, the biggest reason I have a limited number of spoons per day.  I have literally hundreds of symptoms, including lack of energy to start with and becoming tired more easily than most (let me know if you ever want to see the list), but because my TSH is right on the borderline of too high (has to be significantly above 5 to be diagnosed, and it fluctuates between 4.95 and 5.01), I have yet to be diagnosed and treated.  If this changes, I may get some more spoons.  :)

Low blood pressure:  This is one of the symptoms, but this I have been diagnosed with.  It leads to dizziness and a lack of energy.  And of course, it is a self-propagating cycle--the lower in spoons I already am, the more dizzy I get and the less energy I have so the lower in spoons I get, so...

Next, although it pales in comparison, I deal with ulnar neuropathy.  This doesn't drain as many spoons, but when it acts up, it does add a fork (or sometimes more than 1) that other people don't have added.

I also deal with food allergies to wheat and corn, 2 very difficult things to avoid.  If I get "glutened" or "corned" or both, there's another fork (or more realistically a whole bunch of forks) for either the same day or the next day or both.

I have some, thankfully minor because mostly resolved, trauma stuff.  Without going too much into detail, it affects my spoons/forks mostly, for example, if I cough or have a sore throat.

Last, it's completely undiagnosed and pure speculation, but there is a lot of overlap between many of the symptoms of hypothyroidism I experience and symptoms of autism.  So that's a possibility.

I'm starting with April 1 because it's the beginning of the month but also because it's a Monday, which is when I usually start up with using up spoons for the week, after resting on Sunday.

So, let's go!
